This busy family wanted to make their home more inviting for all
the entertaining they love to do. They felt that their kitchen,
breakfast room and family room, the main living area in the house,
was dated and felt “closed in”. They wanted to modernize
the space and really open up their entire living area, creating
greater circulation.
In the Kitchen: Bowers removed the bulkhead in the kitchen area
to install taller cabinets. The cabinets were lighter in color
than the previous cabinets. Between the cabinet color and the
height, the room seems much more open and airy now. We also replaced
the kitchen window, making it larger (and more attractive) to
let in more natural light. The glass front cabinets that surround
the window also add a sense of light. A tumbled marble back splash
is both practical and beautiful. We also added a breakfast bar
for those quick morning meals or for guests to chat with the cook.
Lastly, we added a small desk area that was large enough to house
a phone, notebook and calendar for keeping track of their busy
schedule.

In the Breakfast Area: Bowers took down the walls in the breakfast
area and extended the space into the back yard with a beautifully
curved exterior wall. Two new doors to the back yard create a
better connection with their new outdoor living space. All the
new windows and all glass doors in the house add warmth and light.
The curved space adds interest and practicality because we were
able to add storage cabinets below the windows that significantly
increase the amount of storage in the kitchen area.
New task lighting in both the kitchen and breakfast area make the
room much brighter, yet the recess lighting is less obtrusive.
Lastly, the new beverage center is well positioned between the
breakfast area, kitchen and family room. This new feature allows
for guests to replenish their drinks without having to share space
in the kitchen.

Overall, the homeowners are very pleased with the design of their
new space. They were so pleased with Bowers that we’re coming
back to do their new master suite.
