This
was a typical 1950s kitchen and dining room. The kitchen had pine
cabinets, the original appliances and vinyl flooring. The dining
room was small and dark.
The homeowners wanted to turn the kitchen into a more functional,
modern and eye pleasing space. In addition, they wanted to take
advantage of the southern exposure on the back of the house to
open up the dining room and get more natural light.
So, Bowers removed the wall between the kitchen and the dining
room and installed two new windows in the kitchen area. They also
added a new 15’ x 18’ space off the dining room to
create a new dining and sitting area.
The kitchen now houses professional appliances, granite counter
tops, painted maple cabinets and a tumbled marble back splash.
The dining room has been transformed into an open space with a
high arched ceiling and lots of windows to take advantage of the
southern view. The space that was the old dining room acts as
a beverage center with a wine rack and mini- refrigerator. It
also serves as a transitional space to other parts of the house.
