When our clients purchased this 1836 home — once a Civil War hospital and later a family lake house — they wanted to preserve its charm while making it practical for both weekend gatherings and future retirement. The home’s layout was fragmented, circulation poor, and light limited. Our goal was to honor the home’s rich history while creating a warm, functional retreat that blends old-world character with modern comfort.

A Kitchen Reimagined for Living

The original kitchen lacked both flow and function. By opening up the space and reworking the layout, we created a kitchen that serves as the true heart of the home.

Custom inset cabinetry, warm wood tones, and honed countertops bring a timeless feel, while thoughtful planning ensures every detail supports how the family cooks, gathers, and lives.

At the center, a custom island anchors the space — designed for connection as much as function.

A Signature Architectural Detail

One of the most defining elements of this home is the custom brick arch — an intentional nod to the home’s history.

Rather than remove or replicate, we designed around it — transforming it into a functional focal point that blends craftsmanship with purpose.

Integrated lighting and a built-in cooking surface elevate the feature, making it both beautiful and usable.

We reimagined the home’s layout to create a natural flow between spaces — connecting the kitchen, dining area, and surrounding rooms.

Clear sightlines, improved circulation, and intentional transitions allow the home to feel open without losing its sense of warmth and intimacy.

Every decision was made with one goal: to make the home feel effortless to live in.

Spaces Meant for Gathering

The dining room was designed to feel inviting, relaxed, and filled with natural light.

Large windows, warm wood tones, and soft neutral finishes create an environment that encourages connection — whether for everyday meals or special occasions.

Framed openings and aligned sightlines create a seamless transition between spaces — allowing each room to feel distinct, yet connected.

The result is a space that feels elevated, yet completely comfortable.

A Light-Filled Family Room Restored With Historic Charm

The original family room was dark and divided, with heavy brick walls, built-ins, and low ceilings that made the space feel confined. The reimagined design opens the room to surrounding spaces and introduces significantly more natural light. White-painted brick, restored flooring, and reworked built-ins create a cohesive and inviting environment, while new French doors connect directly to the outdoors. A refinished fireplace and a salvaged beam repurposed as the mantel honor the home’s history while adding warmth and character. The result is a bright, welcoming space that supports both everyday living and gathering.

Honoring Original Character

Original elements, like the brick fireplace, were thoughtfully preserved and integrated into the new design.

These moments add depth and authenticity — ensuring the home retains its story while evolving for the future.

From Pass-Through to Purpose: The Reborn Cupola Room

Previously functioning as a default entry due to its proximity to the parking area, the Cupola Room had lost its identity and comfort. By introducing a new entry foyer elsewhere, this space was freed from acting as a pass-through and could be fully reimagined. The redesigned room now serves as a bright and functional home office, with restored beams, improved HVAC through a discreet mini-split system, and an abundance of natural light. The transformation restores purpose, comfort, and character to one of the home’s most unique spaces.

A Personal Touch: The Whimsical Mouse House

Toward the end of construction, the client brought a unique and meaningful request: a handcrafted “mouse house,” inspired by a tradition in the community. Our team embraced the opportunity to create something truly personal, designing and building the miniature structure entirely on site. Complete with thoughtful detailing and a stone threshold, this small feature reflects the level of care, craftsmanship, and collaboration that defined the entire project.

Primary Suite Addition

The home originally lacked a first-floor bedroom and accessible bath, which limited long-term livability. The new primary suite addition was designed to support aging in place while feeling fully integrated with the historic home. Large windows frame lake views and bring in natural light, while soft finishes and warm textures create a calm, restful retreat. The suite gives the homeowners privacy, comfort, and a layout that supports how they want to live in the years ahead.
