Creating Custom Spaces for Ultimate Livability

When this previous client was diagnosed with a chronic illness, she and her physician husband knew they needed to make accommodations in their split level home.  Despite having intermittent difficulty walking, she is still active in the community, she loves to host her friends and didn’t want an addition to their home to be anything less than elegant. We added an addition that included a master bedroom, bathroom, walk-in closet and sunroom. To enhance the addition, a new atrium is the transition from the original home to the new space.

After: Close up of new addition. Special note: The client believes that natural light helps her health. We did a sun study to learn that the transom windows in the sitting room would give her more natural light than skylights and not produce the heat that skylights would. This sun study helped shape our design recommendations.

Before: Living Room Close Up

The after living room now has two large passage ways to an atrium that leads to the new addition. Molding to compliment the existing fireplace makes the space look as if it’s always been there.

After: Living Room View into Addition. Deep walls in the passage way, trimmed with white wood are elegant and create a pleasant entry to the atrium and addition beyond.

After: Atrium Transition Space. The atrium not only creates transition space to the addition, but it allows for a wall of windows and skylights to continue to let light into the existing home. Wall sconces flank the windows for appropriate lighting at night. New hard wood floors were matched with the old flooring to create the seamless look the homeowner desired. Note: We added a dog door in the far end of the atrium to allow the owners pet to come and go with needing her to do so.

After: Master Bedroom with Sitting Room Beyond. The new master bedroom has plenty of open floor space for the homeowner’s scooter to navigate safely. Wide door openings with pocket doors to the new sitting room remove the obstacle that swing doors can create. Tray ceiling up-lighting, recessed lighting and sconces; all on mid-wall height dimmer switches, create optional lighting schemes.

After: Master Bedroom Corner Windows. Our client loves natural light and feels that it helps her physical and mental health. A bank of corner windows in the master bedroom make sure the room is as bright and sunny as possible. The windows look out to her garden and fish pond.

After: Sitting Room. The new sitting room is intended to give our client a serene place to get away from the activity in the rest of the house. Large windows let in lots of natural light. The desk area is accessible when she needs to use her scooter. Large loop hardware makes opening the drawers easy. Shelf heights are adjustable.

The sitting room has both a his and hers desk area. The gas fireplace turns on with the touch of a remote control. Cedarfield stone surround ties into the natural setting of the treed yard seen through the windows. An oak shelf is the perfect support for the adjustable angle TV arm.

After: Hallway to Bathroom and Closet. The hallway is extra wide enough for our client’s scooter. A pocket door to the toilet room disappears into the wall.

Chair rail was included to assist our client when she is able to walk with a cane.

After: Toilet Room. A wall mounted sink allows our client to pull her scooter up close as needed.

Toilet area shown with additional freestanding support bars. The toilet is equipped with a special bidet feature. Non-slip, textured vinyl tiles create a safe floor.

After: Master Bath Shower and Tub Room. Separated from the sink area by a shower curtain and a translucent glass panel; this wet room gives our client flexibility to shower safely with a bench seat and grab bars.

Or, she can enjoy a tub bath in the Elevance tub with a automatic tub wall. The room is large enough for 2 or more helpers if needed in the future. Lever controls, a hand held shower spray, deep tub walls and an inset niche for soaps make using this bath easier.

After: Bathroom Sink Area. The sink area allows for our client to pull up easily in her scooter.
A single lever faucet control makes adjusting the water easier. Large vertical loop hardware on the cabinets are easy to grab.

Close up of “make up” area. The new master closet has a “make up” area that accommodates our client’s scooter. Drawers and electrical outlets are easily accessible. Her husband helps her rotate seasonal clothes from the top shelves to the bottom ones.

After: View from Bathroom to Closet. Since our client shares this space with her husband, we had to be careful to make it accessible for both of them. Grab bars double as towel bars and some robe hooks are high and some are lower to meet both person’s needs.

After: Master Closet. The new master closet has plenty of turning radius for our client’s scooter. Most drawers and adjustable shelves are lower for ease of access.
