The homeowners’ objectives were to have a kitchen that would be more open to the rest of the home for entertaining, would fade into the background when entertaining, and look modern/contemporary. The kitchen was part of a larger renovation.
The before kitchen was positioned directly inside the front door.
The after kitchen has been moved to the center of the home for better circulation while entertaining.
AFTER KITCHEN – FUNCTIONALITY: Detailed kitchen plan has a great working triangle. There is adequate space for circulation. Loads of counter space works well for everyday use and for entertaining.
The former kitchen was located immediately to the left of the front foyer.
The kitchen was very traditional.
The before kitchen was closed off from the rest of the home and not conducive for entertaining.
Meeting a client need: The new kitchen is full of functionality, but its modern design was specifically intended to fade into the background when entertaining.
To help the kitchen “fade to the background”, high gloss Encore frameless cabinets have touch open features to avoid hardware, even on the refrigerator. The Thermador 36” induction range is also touch screen, free of knobs.
The walnut graining at a 45-degree angle on the wood cabinets matches the angle on the floating table to create symmetry. Cambria Brittanica tops and back splash are artistic yet have a very natural flow. Tops on the island have a waterfall edge to create a modern aesthetic.
Appliances were selected to meet the clients needs for everyday living and for entertaining. Double Thermador Wall Ovens – Wall Built-In Speed Oven – Paneled warming drawer is hidden from view. Paneled 30” Dacor All-Refrigerator and 24” All-Freezer.
Two sinks allow for easy food prep and kitchen clean up. Precis granite composite sinks and Trinsic pull-down faucets look great but provide a lot of functionality.
The Jason Miller three-sided light fixture was specifically selected to complement the triangular shape of the kitchen, but also look great from every direction. Recessed lighting provides great task lighting. All lights are on dimmers for entertaining.
Meeting a client need, the kitchen has great circulation to the rest of the home.
An adjacent pantry/beverage area extends the functionality of the kitchen.
Adjacent to the kitchen is a new pantry/beverage area. Hidden cabinetry to the left store pantry items.
The area to the right houses ice maker, 2-beverage refrigerators, ice maker, dishwasher drawers and more storage. Rugged cement countertops provide a modern look and low maintenance. This space doubles as a service area during entertaining.
CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES/INNOVATIVE CONSTRUCTION METHODS:
The floating island table needed to be comfortable for everyday use but morph into a bar top for events. In order to ensure the table did not pull off, we engineered steel supports that extend through the cabinets and ultimately anchor to the floor joist. Extra electrical outlets hidden under the table increase its functionality.
The electrical rough-ins were more challenging with the cabinet and appliances selected. Touchless opening upper cabinets doors required additional electrical circuits for operation.
Our clients are extremely happy with their new, modern kitchen.
