2017 Washington Metro DC Chapter Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) for Best Kitchen

After raising three sons, these empty nesters were ready to enjoy a gourmet kitchen for themselves. They love to cook and entertain and the former kitchen was dated, dark and uninviting. With all new appliances, cabinets, flooring, lighting, open design and more… they believe their new kitchen is beautiful yet functional for cooking and entertaining.

Before, this 1970s kitchen served the family well for more than 10 years. But, these empty nesters were ready to enjoy their time in a renewed kitchen.

After, the kitchen is more open, light and modern.

The before kitchen was… functional.

The after kitchen is both functional and beautiful. The homeowners say “it is amazing”.

The before kitchen had an electric stove top in the island. The homeowners wanted the island to be stove top free and they wanted to convert to gas cooking.

The new wolf 36” gas range with griddle is perfect for these two home chefs. The new custom vent hood, made by local a craftsman, is brushed 16-gauge steel with hammered copper rim and rivets.

White raised panel maple cabinets are accented with caravelas-gold granite on the island. Seeded glass pendants set in oil rubbed bronze fixtures complement the cabinet hardware.

A 48“ built-in subzero side-by-side refrigerator/freezer gives them all the refrigeration space they need. The refrigerator is next to a triple tower including microwave, wall oven and warming drawer. Elongated cabinets and drawers were carefully chosen to supply just the right amount of storage space.

Before the kitchen was closed off to the conditioned sunroom by double doors. Not only did the doors take up a lot of space, but they acted as a barrier making the spaces feel disconnected.

Removing the doors created unobstructed flow between the sunroom, kitchen and family room.

Tile flooring in the before kitchen area also made the space feel separated from the rest of the house.

Installing hard wood to match the existing family room helped to connect the spaces visually. The corbels used on the island were purposely designed to mimic the corbels on the new knee wall counter top between the family room and kitchen.

Dark cabinets, and improper lighting made the before kitchen feel dark.

Opening up the walls, removing the doors and installing both pendant task lighting and recessed general lighting really helped to bring light into the space.

The former sunroom had an opening to the kitchen that looked like a drive up window!

Making the opening larger and creating a spot for casual dining really helped to make these spaces more fluid.

The new butler’s pantry/beverage center is beautiful; but chocked full of functionality. Cabinet storage exists on both sides of the area.

A slotted end panel on the right side hides the hvac vent. Flush mounted light fixture in rusted iron adds a bit of definition to the space.

Sometimes the little details make a big difference…

Beautiful maple panels make the beverage refrigerator integrated in the cabinetry.

The hammered copper sink coordinates with the hammered copper accents on the vent hood.

La crema marfil marble field tile with accent tiles coordinate with the granite. Faux paint on the electrical covers help blend them into the tile pattern.

Adding “feet” onto the bottom of the cabinets flanking the range give them a furniture quality feel.

The kitchen dining area was separated from the family room with a wood guardrail before. The new knee wall with a red oak counter top not only looks great, but it is functional for serving guests as a buffet table for appetizers or cocktails.

Deep drawers opposite the range provide easy access to even the largest pots and pans.

Beautiful cabinetry with added functionality.

An organization center behind a cabinet door gives easy access to a file cabinet, white board, key rack and more.
