This couple wanted their house to better meet their current needs AND allow them to “age in place”. The clients are very happy that we were able to repurpose their existing space to meet all their stated objectives. They wanted a gourmet kitchen… with an adjacent sitting room, a better master suite with a larger master bath and walk-in-closet. This was all done within their existing footprint. We were also able to meet their need for a new main level powder-room, mudroom and laundry area by taking space from their existing over-sized garage.

After First Floor Plan: Shows How We Repurposed Existing Space to Meet All Client Objectives. Former kitchen, family room and dining room were repurposed for gourmet kitchen, sitting lounge and dining. Space was taken from oversized garage for a new mudroom… “Family Foyer”. Hall bathroom was renovated in the existing space. Former master suite and a spare room were repurposed to create a larger master bath and walk-in-closet.
The former kitchen was too small for the husband and wife cooking and cleaning team!
The After Kitchen encompasses what was the former kitchen and formal dining room.
This portion of the new kitchen is the chef husband’s space. We reused his beloved butcher-clock counter; incorporating it into the design by painting the base to match the island. He has his own sink and range.
The wife prides herself on being the “clean up” person. So, her side of the kitchen has a sink, dish washer and cabinets for every day storage. The new kitchen has a complete Wolf/Subzero package of appliances. The refrigerator strategically separates the “his” and “her” spaces.
The kitchen features a large island with hubby’s butcher block at one end. The double ovens are on “his” side of the kitchen. Perimeter Upper and Lower Frameless Cabinets in Moonlight White. Island Frameless Cabinets and Paneling Surround in Coventry Gray. Tops are Mont Blanc Leathered Quartzite. Argento Bell Pendants in polished nickel. Backsplash 3X9 ceramic tiles.

The Before Space adjacent to the kitchen was technical the home’s family room, but our client used it as the dining area.
We replaced the dining area with an informal sitting area adjacent to the kitchen. We designed and built a special fireplace wall as the focal point. A special frame was built for the antique stained glass window the client won from an Auction but had never had a place to put it. We designed and custom built the entire fireplace surround. American oak gas logs are inset; surrounded by Virginia Mist Honed Granite.
Pantry Storage drawers display a portion of one of the client’s favorite Virginia Woolf quotes: “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well”. Full Height Furniture Style Pantry with Wood Interior. Flat Panel, 4 Piece Drawer Fronts with Colonial Edge. Color/Finish: Moonlight White.
New Mudroom aka “Family Foyer”. The former oversized garage had plenty of extra space to give to the new “Family Foyer” Area.
We took the wasted space from the garage and created a “Family Foyer” complete with powder room, mudroom, and laundry.
We suggest any “Family Foyer” area have a powder room nearby. The location of this powder room is centrally located in the new mudroom; between the kitchen and the garage. Vanity was custom designed and built to look like a piece of furniture with toe kick.
The new main level laundry room is very functional with custom built cabinets and walnut counter top ideal for folding.
A rod for hanging clothes completes the space.
Mudroom Area
Custom Built Cubbies and Walnut Bench make the mudroom area very functional.
The clients come and go through the garage door… shown in the photo. So, a desk area in the mudroom space to accommodate mail sorting, storage and device charging is ideal.
The before hall bathroom had a double-bowl vanity.
Using existing space, the renewed hall bathroom has a single bowl vanity and built-in tower storage cabinet.
Before: The former master closet are consisted of two linear closets in a small alcove off the master bedroom.
The new master walk-in-closet takes the place of an unused spare bedroom adjacent to the master bedroom. Custom job built cabinets and shelving units. Walnut top.
The former master bathroom was small and in need of repair.
A linen/storage closet was nearby.
The new master bathroom takes up the space of the former master bath and closet area. We custom designed the cabinets and had them built by a local cabinet maker. Paint finish is Thundercloud Gray. Fixtures and hardware in polished nickel.
A soaker tub and large walk-in shower are exactly what the client wanted. Floor and wall are 6 X 12 Bianco Venatino honed marble tiles.
The 72″ Langley Cast Iron Double-Slipper Pedestal Tub is perfect for our tall homeowners.
The new double bowl vanity has loads more storage and space than the former.
Large seamless glass shower makes the room feel even larger.
